"First of all, our guide, Babang, was absolutely fantastic. You could immediately tell he genuinely loves what he does, it felt like he was taking us to his favourite places rather than simply following a route. What really stood out was his first-hand knowledge. As an experienced snowboarder & drone pilot, he'd explored many of the mountains himself, so he could explain the terrain, seasonal changes & when areas were safe/ unsafe for hiking/ climbing. He taught us how to spot avalanche warning signs & explained how vegetation changes with altitude. He also shared fascinating stories about the fjords, the Sami people & their reindeer, viking history, hidden mountain cabins & even local stories behind houses/ hotels around Tromsø. Every stop came with a story that made the landscape feel alive. This wasn't just a sightseeing tour—it was a geography/ history & mountain survival lesson all in one. Highly recommend this tour, especially if you're lucky enough to have Babang as your guide!"

How the Sommarøy Day Trip from Tromsø Works
Four steps from central Tromsø to a picnic on the coast at 69°N.
Meet in Central Tromsø
The minibus departs from Samuel Arnesens gate 5 in Tromsø and returns to the same point — note the listing excludes drop-off at your accommodation. You travel with a two-person team: a guide who narrates and a dedicated driver, with tours offered in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.
Cross the Bridge to Kvaløya
Most of the trip is a scenic drive across Kvaløya — deep valleys, dramatic Arctic mountains, and the coastal road toward Sommarøy, with repeated stops at viewpoints. The breaks double as wildlife watch: the operator lists reindeer, moose, and sea eagles as possible sightings along the route.
Picnic by the Sea at Sommarøy
At Sommarøy the group stops for a seaside picnic — a light lunch with local Arctic flavors and hot drinks, about 40 minutes by the water. To keep you comfortable outside in any season, the operator provides thermal suits and boots.
Get Your Photo the Next Day
Your guide photographs you and the landscape throughout the tour and sends the picture free of charge the following day — the listing pitches it as the souvenir of the trip, and reviewers confirm the photo stops are unhurried.

If you only book one thing on Sommarøy, the case for this trip is mostly arithmetic. At $52 it is the cheapest Sommarøy tour on our list — every alternative starts at $79 or more — yet 1,252 travelers rate it 4.8/5, and the package covers the things that usually cost extra: a guide-and-driver team, a seaside picnic lunch with hot drinks, thermal suits and boots for the stops, and a photo of you in the landscape sent free the next day.
What the 4.5 Hours Actually Cover
The tour is a round trip of Kvaløya, the big island between Tromsø and Sommarøy. You leave from Samuel Arnesens gate 5 in central Tromsø, cross the bridge, and spend most of the route on the coastal road — the operator describes deep valleys, dramatic Arctic mountains, fjords, beaches, and fishing villages, with stops “in many places to show you as much as possible.” The itinerary lists roughly 3 hours 50 minutes of scenic driving and photo stops on Kvaløya, then about 40 minutes of food tasting at Sommarøy before the run back to the same starting point.
The stops are also the wildlife window. The operator names reindeer, moose, and sea eagles as species the route can turn up — sightings are luck, but reviewers do report them: one UK guest describes the guide “pointing out sea eagles and a reindeer” mid-drive.
Lunch on an Arctic Beach
The meal is a picnic, not a restaurant stop — a light lunch built around local Arctic flavors, served by the sea with hot drinks. In winter that sounds ambitious, which is exactly why the operator hands out thermal suits and boots before anyone leaves the bus. Guests seem to treat the format as a feature rather than a compromise:
“Hot drinks and buns on an icy beach, a unique experience! We didn’t feel rushed at any stop and had plenty of time to look and take photos. A great introduction to the area.”

If you want to know what you’ll be looking at on the way — which pull-offs, which beaches — our Sommarøy map marks the route’s highlights, and the Tromsø to Sommarøy guide explains why a tour beats the bus for a day trip (short version: the bus timetable doesn’t combine into a usable day trip).
If This Isn’t Quite Your Trip
Six alternatives cover the other briefs, all with free cancellation up to 24 hours. Want a proper hot meal instead of a picnic? The Sommerøya and Kvaløya Arctic fjords tour (from $126, rated 4.8/5 by 332 travelers) includes a traditional Norwegian soup or wrap and adjusts pickup times to cruise schedules. Traveling on a budget but want food included? The Sommarøy islands and Arctic fjords tour with local food starts at $82 and holds a 5.0/5 rating from 82 reviewers. Photography-first? The Sommarøy “paparazzi” tour caps the group at 7 people (from $79, rated 4.8/5 by 102 travelers). And if you’d rather be on the water than beside it, see the Sommarøy sea kayaking tour — or, in summer, the midnight sun trip that does this coastline at midnight. The full lineup is on the tours page.
Who This Tour Fits
It’s built for first visits: no car rental, no winter driving, no logistics beyond showing up in central Tromsø. Solo travelers, couples, and families all appear in the review feed, and the recurring notes are the same — small group, unhurried stops, guides who know the terrain personally. One reviewer summed up the format: “Wonderful scenic tour with a small group… numerous photo stops with amazing views. A snack lunch on a snow-covered beach was a unique experience.”

What Travelers Say About This Sommarøy Tour
"A glowing review of a summer tour of Tromsø fjords on the warmest day of the year, featuring vivid scenery: emerald mountains, clear blue water, almost tropical sandy beaches under golden light. The small-group minibus tour was elevated by guide Babang, described as the best ever. He shared deep knowledge beyond geography: Norwegian history, culture, politics, Sami people, fishing, and even philosophical reflections on Arctic life and snowboarding. Stops at Kaldfjord and Ersfjordbotn offered postcard-perfect views, plus a waterside picnic with coffee. Tips: summer brings endless daylight, vibrant colors, great hiking; pack layers for breeze; bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Request Babang for an unforgettable experience. The rare warm day, combined with his storytelling, made the visit magical. Highly recommended in any season."

"Simon was very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgable. He told us much information about the beautiful locations we visited and also during the journey, pointing out sea eagles and a reindeer. Hot drinks and buns on an icy beach, a unique experience! We didn't feel rushed at any stop and had plenty of time to look and take photos. A great introduction to the Arctic. Thank you Simon!"
"Wonderful scenic tour with a small group, accompanied by a friendly and knowledgable guide. Numerous photo stops with amazing views. A snack lunch on a snow-covered beach was a unique experience. I highly recommend this tour."
"Our guide Simon is very professional and considerable. We had a great time in the journey, the scenery was breathtaking and memorable. All well arranged"
"This was my absolute favourite tour from Tromso. Our guide Bert was amazing. His passion for the artic is evident in the effort and care he took with us to ensure that we had a great experience. Our driver Marcin was so helpful and we trusted his driving in snowy conditions. Bert took some great photos, which were emailed promptly, including a map of where we had travelled to. There were several beautiful stops for photographs, including on a frozen lake, and drinks in the most stunning spot. We didn’t feel rushed, saw so many different areas, and felt looked after. I cannot recommend this tour more."

"The host was great. The spots were different from one another. The lunch stop at the end was so peaceful."

"It was a great day. We did the Arctic Nature Tour. The guide tells a lot about everything and is enthusiastic. We have been to the most beautiful places. The guide also takes some beautiful pictures of you. A day to never forget! I definitely recommend booking an excursion here."

Sommarøy Day Trip Questions, Answered
How the tour runs, what the lunch is, what wildlife you might see, and how the alternatives compare.
It's a 4.5-hour round trip of Kvaløya from central Tromsø, from $52 per person. The price includes a professional local guide plus an experienced driver, scenic photo stops along the route, a seaside picnic lunch with local Arctic flavors, hot drinks, and a photo from the tour that your guide sends free of charge the following day. Thermal suits and boots are provided for the outdoor stops. 1,252 travelers rate the package 4.8 out of 5.
The minibus departs from Samuel Arnesens gate 5 in Tromsø and arrives back at the same point. Drop-off at your accommodation is explicitly excluded, so plan to walk or taxi from the meeting point. If you're weighing the tour against getting to Sommarøy on your own, the Tromsø to Sommarøy guide runs the numbers on driving, the 420 bus, and taxis.
Possibly — no operator can promise wild animals, and this one doesn't. What the listing says is that the many photo breaks double as 'an excellent opportunity for spotting wildlife, like reindeer, moose and sea eagles.' Reviews back this up as a real chance rather than marketing: one guest describes the guide pointing out sea eagles and a reindeer during the drive.
A picnic, not a restaurant: a light lunch built on local Arctic flavors, served by the sea with hot beverages, with about 40 minutes at Sommarøy for the food stop. Guests consistently describe it as a highlight precisely because of the setting — 'hot drinks and buns on an icy beach, a unique experience,' as one UK reviewer put it.
The operator provides thermal suits and boots to keep you warm and comfortable during the outside stops — that's part of the package, not an upsell. Dress in warm layers underneath and you're covered in any season; reviewers report picnicking happily on snow-covered beaches in February.
Three stand out from the same departure city, all with free cancellation. The Sommerøya and Kvaløya Arctic fjords tour (from $126, rated 4.8/5 by 332 travelers) serves a traditional Norwegian soup or wrap and syncs pickups to cruise schedules. The Sommarøy islands and Arctic fjords tour with local food starts at $82 and holds 5.0/5 from 82 reviewers. And the Sommarøy 'paparazzi' photo tour caps the group at 7 people, from $79, rated 4.8/5 by 102 travelers. Compare the full lineup on the tours page.
Cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. That applies to the featured $52 trip and to every alternative listed on this page, so you can lock in a date early and adjust if your Tromsø plans or the weather forecast shift.
Yes, and many visitors do — this day trip shows you the coastline from land, and the water and light versions cover the rest. The guided Sommarøy sea kayaking tour (from $159, rated 4.8/5) paddles the archipelago itself, and between roughly late May and late July the midnight sun tour (from $113, rated 5.0/5) does the same fjord country at midnight.
